Movie Review: 'Ma' Is a Jumbled Mess
In a perfect world an actress with the talent and charisma of Octavia Spencer would get any role that suits her, leading or otherwise. But it has been her experience, and indeed, the experience of many actresses, that talent often doesn't mean as much to Hollywood producers, as having an actress who is an example of mainstream notions of attractiveness.

Five Takeaways from First Trailer for '47 Meters Down: Uncaged'
47 Meters Down was a shocking and surprising hit movie in 2017 that appeared to arrive out of absolutely nowhere. The film starring a pre-This is Us Mandy Moore, alongside Clair Holt as young sisters trapped in a shark cage while on a fantasy vacation, was made on a shoestring, $6 million dollar budget, went on to gross more than $61 million dollars worldwide. Naturally, despite an ending that doesn’t exactly tease a sequel, producers are eager to capitalize on the hit.

Movie Review: 'Brightburn' Fails to Fire Up Scares
Brightburn ruined my day. I was in a good mood before I saw this nasty, brutal, B-movie. What if Superman were evil, and Ma and Pa Kent were morons; that's the premise of Brightburn. Take the paragon of virtue, Superman, and make him a figure of ugly malevolence. Subversion is a perfectly suitable goal, but you’d better have a good point to said subversion, be it merely an interesting thinkpiece or an alt-world comic book. Unfortunately, all Brightburn has is a premise, and a taste for blood.

Movie Review: 'The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders' Exploits a Cult Legend
Room 37 The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders has a high ick factor. A speculative horror movie about the final days of former New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders, played by Leo Ramsey, Room 37 leaves good taste well behind with its very premise. Leering and sweaty, Room 37 The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders opts for ugly, unfounded speculation over anything remotely accurate about what may have happened to the mercurial rock star.

The 2000s Movie Project: 'Scream 3'
The third entry in The 2000s Movie Project was the first blockbuster of this young century Scream 3. I won't lie to you, when it was released on February 11, 2000, I was a Scream 3 apologist. I defended the movie even as the critical consensus was dire. Naturally, I never revisited the movie again so as to preserve my opinion. Watching it again, from a more mature perspective, it's not that I was wrong, it's that I did not yet know how to determine how wrong I was.

Movie Review: The Original 'I Spit on Your Grave' Is Still Terrible
In the early 2000s, it became briefly hip amongst film cultists to defend Meir Zarchi's 1978 exploitation flick, I Spit on Your Grave. Cult film critic, Joe Bob Briggs, is on the record calling the film a "masterpiece of cinema.” So many stepped forward to defend the film, that it earned a special edition dvd release from Elite Entertainment to celebrate the film’s 25 year anniversary back in 2003. The dvd came complete with THX sound, tv spots, critic reviews, and two commentary tracks—one by the film’s director Meir Zarchi and the other by the aforementioned Joe Bob Briggs.

Movie Review: 'Porno'
Porno is a mixed bag of horror and comedy. Porno is a horror comedy that involves a small town movie theater that is cursed by a sex demon, though owned by a religious fanatic. One night, after the owner has gone home, and the teenage staff is going to watch a movie, when a crazed homeless man bursts into the building and runs through a wall.

Movie Review 'Devil's Path' Is a Throwback Drive in Thriller
Devil’s Path is the kind of old school, grind house, chase in the woods thriller Hollywood doesn’t know how to make anymore. A throwback to the bloody, drive in thrillers of the 1970s, Devil’s Path is a visceral and often disturbing thriller with exceptional characters and a killer pace. Actor turned first time director Matthew Montgomery directs Devil’s Path and delivers a stunner of a debut feature.

Movie Review 'The Drone'
The Drone is one of the silliest nonsense horror movies of recent memory. The film ranks next to movies like Zombeavers or the Korean horror movie, The Wig, which features killer hair extensions, as a movie with a dopey beyond dopey premise. The Drone features exactly what the title promises, a drone. Only this particular drone happens to have the spirit of a dead serial killer inside of it.

So, Brian calls a friend to be his sponsor and join him as he dries out a cabin he owns on a remote, California mountainside.

Child's Play: Chucky at 30
How did our culture come to allow Chucky from Child’s Play become a thing? Thirty years after the film debuted Chucky remains in the darkest corners of our popular culture appealing to those with a bizarre, macabre sense of humor and a deep tolerance for stupid. Personally, I’ve never had any interest in this silly horror doll nonsense. I’ve never understood the appeal.
