AI Generated Stories On Vocal? Seriously, What Is The Point?

Even Seeing One AI-Generated Story On Vocal Is One Too Many. A Critique of AI-Fiction

An AI Creation By The Author

Introduction

When I see that a story is AI-generated it is a red flag to me, something to avoid. Today I have seen a lot on Vocal, and yes they are flagging themselves but seriously what is the point? I don't want to read something that someone couldn't be bothered to write.

AI Fiction

I class this with 3D films and TV as just a passing fad. I don't see any 3D systems on sale these days.

I remember Sky advertising that we could watch football in 3D with the appropriate subscription, software, hardware and glasses. I thought I could just go to a real football match.

While I think AI is useful for system documentation (though it still needs to be checked by a human who knows what they are talking about), what is the point of AI fiction apart from a one-off exercise?

When AI tools became available someone told me how brilliant it would be to not have to spend any time writing their Vocal stories. I said well you aren't writing and I won't read your work. I think he saw the error of his words.

I use AI for art, to avoid accusations of plagiarism, but there are times it will not do the job so I look for free pictures or use my photographs. I make my AI Art available for free on Pixabay here which is a mix of my AI Art and Photography.

AI Music is shockingly good but I use short songs and would never dream of using them commercially, but if I cannot get an appropriate song for my Vocal story I will use an AI-generated piece. This poem has an example.

Conclusion

I know the AI flag lets us know that stuff is AI-generated, but, as I say it just seems a pointless exercise. I would never share my art with an artist community, because I am no artist and would not want to take space that belonged to a real artist.

I think I have said enough.

Thank you for reading.

The music is "All Hail The Machine" from "The Machine Stops" by Hawkwind. Take a listen, it is appropriate.

Thank you for all the responses, and I find it annoying that lots of server space is taken up by AI stories that people will probably never read

  • I'm glad you highlighted this Mikeydred! I haven't been reading fiction much these days, so that might have flown right past me. Still, it SUCKS! I agree totally, like what is the point??? Logic seems to have gone out the window...

  • Agreed! I don't want to read anything that someone just plugged into AI and came up with a story in an instant. I'd rather read something from a real writer!

I feel this way about all AI art. I don’t want ai writing infiltrating spaces made for people who actually take the time and effort to write. And I feel the same for other forms of creative expression. I agree ai music is surprisingly believable. But I hate the idea of humans who have nurtured and practiced real musical talent being overlooked and ignored in favor of an ai generated tune. It just hurts the soul to think about that. I’d rather see and celebrate a human artist, even an unpolished one, over an ai generated anything. That said, I do find the capabilities of ai pretty fascinating. I just don’t think these things should be circulated in places where real art can do the trick.

Ugh, I hate those! They oftentimes don't make sense or promote AI stuff too.

I won't read anything written by an author who posts just one story with the check mark AI-generated. I wish I could afford to pay an artist or that I could draw well enough, so that I didn't have to use AI images in my work.

AI is helpful with research and fact checking and as a source of fun when I am bored and don't want to talk to actual people. I have an open mind these days. My brain needs the exercise in every aspect of life.

You're exactly right, Mikeydred: if the whole point is to write, and you delegate that art and craft to an LLM, what have you done? Nothing worthy of serious critical or aesthetic attention, that is for sure!

"I don't want to read something that someone couldn't be bothered to write." Exactly! Why should I bother to read it?

  • Joe O’Connorabout a year ago

Yeah it does seem to make little sense in a creative community. I understand why people would use it for editing purposes, or even to prompt, but it does seem to defeat the whole point 🤷🏽‍♂️

  • Congratulations MikeyD on your honourable mention on the Vocal leadership board! YaY! 😊

Yeah, I guess their philosophy aligns with other arguments against banning things: people are still going to do it; you’ve just forced them to go underground with it. That said, I certainly don’t get the appeal, either. And the bad actors aren’t going to tag their stories because then most people, like us, don’t want to read them. Plus that’s an automatic challenge disqualification now

  • Ugh, I just wish Vocal would ban AI-Generated content!

  • Caroline Cravenabout a year ago

Great piece Mike - totally agree. I don't see the point in getting someone else to write something for you. It would be like making my dog go for a run instead of me and logging the miles!? Weird!

  • Val Garnerabout a year ago

I agree, I wish AI written content were banned here.

I agree I don’t mind AI as an editing tool sometimes but to do all the writing

I share your sentiment about using AI to write. We can use it as a prompt, but the writing has to be ours or there's no point.

I wish Vocal had simply said no to AI-generated stories, but it seems we're stuck with it. I'm still on the fence about AI images, but I appreciate that you don't use yours in artistic circles.

Great story, and AI does have its place in say business at times and computer apps but again as you said not fiction and to me that AI takes the fun out of writing.

Good story, and it is sad that AI is becoming ever so present in our lives. I hate our banks' automated teller, his name is Bo. I call him Bo Bo the clown.

  • Daphsamabout a year ago

Great story, so sad that ai is becoming so strong.

This was very well written, and I feel your pain. I have to scroll through a lot of them to find things I want to read, hidden in between them. Nice use of image, and it was very engaging. I liked that you included a link to your AI art. Well done.

It very sad if everything turn to AI. We were meant to create not be passive and let a machine do everything. I here you on this piece. Who collect AI books? Goggle is now AI when you are searching for information. It's side, people do not generate information anymore
