“Papers?” the uniformed man said as Jacob and his spectral companion made their way through to the front of the immigration queue. Burned by the sun and sea, Jacob’s papers crumbled between his fingers as he pulled them from his jacket; the sins of crisscrossing the globe he supposed.

Beyond the iron bars, the uniformed man took it reverently. He looked at the papers, then toward Jacob, then back down at the papers, and Jacob assumed he looked like quite the miserable sight. What would Arthur think if he saw him now? Hell, his visage alone might have been enough to keep him from passing into the Dominion.

“Vimy.”

“Pardon?” Jacob snapped back to the present.

“I was at Vimy. You?”

“Passchendaele.”

“Hmm. Welcome to Canada,” the uniformed man said, handing back the documents.

Jacob nodded and passed the kiosk.

“They never leave you. Even when you face them, the faces...never leave.”

Jacob paused. the specter hung just behind the edges of his vision. “Thank you.”

It was all he could muster.

Ha! I remember this. Might have to go back a read the last few eps. This came out right around the same time as Twilight of Ares. WHICH WAS A FRICKEN GREAT STORY! Sorry for yelling but it was. One of your most memorable for me.
