The Supernatural Love Story that was Never Resolved

We never got confirmation what this love confession truly meant.

Even though the finale season of Supernatural had its flaws, there was one very powerful moment that I thought was one of the best scenes in the show. During one tense confrontation against Death herself, Dean and his best friend, Castiel, are forced to run away from her as she chases them down. They find themselves at a dead end inside of a room, while Death attempts to break the door down.

Castiel makes the decision to confess his love for Dean, knowing that this confession will lead to his own death, due to a deal that he had made with a powerful entity. Castiel smiles at Dean as he confesses his love for him, admitting that he knows that he can't have the one thing that he has always desired. Dean looks at his friend with shock, as tears gather in his eyes, as he begs Castiel to not continue his confession.

Castiel touches his shoulder after the confession, and he is killed by the entity in front of Dean, as he also takes Death with him. Dean is left on his own, crying for his best friend's death.

This is literally the very last scene the two of them have together.

I still have so many questions as to what that confession meant. Fans were divided on this confession, whether it was romance or a platonic friendship kind of love.

Personally, I do believe this was an actual love confession.

During season 15, I was honestly starting to believe that Dean and Castiel were going to get together. I know that this show was known for is 'queerbaiting,' but this season between the two men felt much stronger than before, due to the conflict they were both experiencing. In episode 9, we probably got the second most powerful scene between them, when Castiel goes missing. Dean panics over his disappearance, and literally falls on his knees, crying and praying for his friend's return.

When Dean reunites with him, he throws himself at Castiel, the two men embracing.

You're telling me that this was supposed to be a friendship???

Deep down, I truly believe that Dean also was in love with his friend. But due to the really bad situation they were both stuck in, I get why either of them didn't have time to say such a bold statement to each other.

And I'm positive that we could have gotten a confirmation scene between the two of them later, but due to scheduling conflicts during the pandemic, we never got the aftermath of this confession. The only scene we got was when Dean smiled over Castiel being mentioned, but that smile could have meant anything, and that final scene with Dean made me wonder what the hell was going through his mind.

For me, I didn't need a kiss to confirm their love for each other.

I think it would have been awesome to have gotten a different ending for the show. Toward the end of the season, Dean dies from his last adventure with Sam.

There is one ending I would have loved to have seen.

Dean dies, goes to Heaven, and he reunites with Castiel.

Instead of seeing Sam die too, he could have moved on with his love interest, Elaine, and start a family with her. We see Sam happy, and then we cut back to Heaven, for the final shot of the season. Dean eventually reunites with Castiel in Heaven, and the two of them only smile at each other, tears in their eyes.

That would have been the perfect ending for these two characters. We wouldn't need an explanation for what this scene could mean, the love confession would be left up to interpretation for the fans, and it would have been a great way to end the show.

I agree with fans that we desperately needed one more scene between them. Their friendship was the heart of the show, and that confession was extremely important to the bond these two men had.

Whether it was romantic or platonic, Dean and Castiel's friendship was the most powerful bond in the whole show, and it sucks how we will never know what that confession could have meant.
