Some - Others
No Choice
We continue. Some get up in the morning, some reluctantly, some with enthusiasm, some pull the covers over their heads.
Some of us attempt to do a little cardio or yoga, or at least a little stretch while we yawn.
Some of us make the bed perfectly before leaving the room. Some of us leave the tangled mess of sheets from the heat of the night before.
Some of us make a strong cup of coffee. Some of us nurse hangovers while the blender grinds our power food shakes.
Some of us get our suits or dress clothes ready for a day at the office. Some don the uniforms of their trade. Some of us keep our PJs on while we sign into remote work. Some of us crash on the couch while we scroll Indeed on our phones, looking for a job that fits.
Some of us wake sleepy kids for another day at school. Some of us make breakfast listening to the chatter.
Some of us stay home with babies and small children, working hard to give them the best life possible, caring and protecting them from life's little mishaps. Trying to raise good humans, sometimes in difficult circumstances.
Some of us work remotely, connecting only with the words on a page and little boxes of humans on a screen.
Some of us head out to work. We drive, we bus, we bike, we walk. Trying to beat the clock.
Some of us are executives at multinationals. Some of us keep the economy going at shops and galleries. Some of us labor, building roads, homes, working the fields, and mining precious metals and oil.
Some of us head home after our workday is done. Some of us are just starting our night shifts.
Some of us head out to dinner or drinks. Some of us dine alone. Some with friends.
Some make dinner from scratch. Some heat up a frozen dinner. Some throw a bunch of stuff in a blender and call it a meal.
Some tuck children into bed with stories. Some tell the kids to go to bed and not bother them.
Some make a cup of tea. Some open a bottle of something strong.
Some stay up all night. Some crash on the couch. Some keep regular bedtimes.
Some watch the news and take in the daily horror. Some prefer to ignore anything that upsets them.
Some dream of pleasant things. Some have terrible nightmares.
Some of us struggle with depression. Some try to push through racism and bigotry. Some try until they can't.
Others continue. Others get up in the morning, reluctantly, or with enthusiasm. Others might pull the covers over their heads.
Others do their morning routines. Maybe a workout, yoga or a gentle stretch.
Others tidy up, they make breakfast or pour a cup of coffee.
Others get ready for daily life. They shower and dress. They dress for work or stay in cozy PJ’s.
Others wake up children and prepare them for school or daycare.
Others, open up laptops and work remotely. Or they transit to offices, shops or don hardhats for a day of physical labor, oil, precious minerals, contributing to the world economy.
Others stay home and raise their children to be kind and good humans despite difficult circumstances.
Others go out to dinner with friends or alone. Others hurry home to make dinner for families or themselves.
Others tuck children into bed. Kissing them goodnight or yelling go to sleep.
Others pour a cup of tea or a shot of something strong.
Others absorb the news. Others try to ignore it. Others lie awake, some sleep to escape.
Others dream, others have nightmares.
Others fight off fear and depression.
Others try to understand bigotry and oppression. Others try until they can’t.
OTHERS do all the things that SOME do. But they do it with sirens wailing, bombs dropping, their homes, schools, and workplaces crumbling around them.
But others do, until they can't.
