Aging for Real
A poem about the reality of growing old
Growing old is not a choice
We all do it at some point
*
It often starts with poor eyesight
Or a stiff and painful joint
*
Aging gracefully is nothing but words
What's graceful about leaking pee?
*
That excruciating feeling from sciatica pain
Or the soreness you feel in your knee
*
To call the aged silver foxes living golden years
Are merely metaphors we use that help to ease our fears
*
The facts are really tough to hear
But we must know the truth
*
Before we age we should prepare
By starting in our youth
*
We know how aging affects our bones
And memories are often lost
*
Take care of your bones and eat the right food
The less medicine and doctor bills cost
*
Neglect your teeth and dentures you'll wear
So see a dentist when you need to
*
Cause wearing false teeth is nothing fun
Pay attention and it might not be you
*
But whether you can stop the aging process
Is not really up for debate
*
Cause age is something we all have to do
And we can't just think it'll wait
*
Our bodies have no choice in life
We age more every day
*
But how we age is up to us
So listen to what I say
*
Don't listen to the fallacies
About age and how to cope
*
From people who don't really know
But want to give you hope
*
They talk like senior living is great
And aging should be fun
*
They think old folks should be content
Wearing sunhats and lying in the sun
*
They mean well when they think the elderly
Can relax and enjoy their last days
*
But failing health and changing homes
Is stressful in so many ways
*
Stop taking the topic of aging so lightly
Start treating it like a big deal
*
The future of elderly people you love
Relies on you keeping it real
