Mysterious snake

making only the softest rustle

as it slithers away

moving with caution yet it never looks back

And then another sound

so quiet and subtle

like a small tremor, a distant thunder

Can you hear it?

It's growing louder, moving closer

Feel the vibrations beneath your feet?

The earth beneath you as it moves in response?

Closer it approaches

And then a whiny loud and energetic

It's more than a tremor

It's the galloping of hooves

kicking up clouds of dust that overshadow 2025

A horse

Majestic and free-spirited it stands before you

waiting

There is no rein or saddle

You grip its mane

eyes wild and impatient, you know it can't be tamed

Unstoppable, it moves with an agility as the earth blurs past

and takes you away into 2026

Goodbye, Year of the Snake and Hello, Year of the Horse!

Outstanding work, Jasmine! You captured the theme of the approaching Year of the Horse beautifully. Congratulations on your top story and good luck in the challenge ❣

Enjoyed the transition from snake to horse, and the implicit change of tone of what the year of the snake to horse represents. The galloping of the horse and 2026 moving full forward is felt!

LOVED this!!! I am the year of the horse...a wooden one, though. You captured the essence of horses :)

Happy Horse Year, Jasmine! What a great poem, it rushes how a horse runs.

  • I kept meaning to read this, and now I have. I love your words and the image

Your poem made me pause and imagine the earth trembling under the galloping hooves. There’s a sense of freedom and motion here that’s impossible to forget.
