I have a time to write plainly
for the Say It Plainly Challenge

I am not one to speak plainly
- sometimes, I repeat and ramble,
or talk in circles before reaching the point -
and much like the way I speak,
I write.
*
But it is more than that,
because I always (used to) believed that poetry
is more than what is on the surface.
I (used to) believe poetry was meant to be written
in metaphors, illustrations, and parallels
and its words should not be taken at face value,
much like the authors who wrote it.
I (used to) to believe poetry
- again much like its creators -
was meant for multiple interpretations.
*
And I still do.
*
But there is a power in bluntness,
to getting to the point.
Removing the layers of metaphors and such
is to remove confusion and misinterpretations
so the author's truth is no longer lost.
And here I thought saying what's on your mind
was reckless
when really it's just as brave
and emotionally driven
as all those metaphors,
illustrations,
and parallels.
*
So if there is anything I've learn from this:
just like there is a time to speak,
and a time to keep silent,
there is a time for suggestion,
and there is time to write plainly.
