Heyyy! Get it, baby...
Yes! Go on wit yo bad self...
Stunt on em, boo-boo!...
Author's Note: This piece was inspired by a compilation video that I recently saw of people appreciating compliments from random Black women! :)
The following clip highlights our unique flavor when it comes to issuing out compliments.
Enjoy 😁:

Love this haiku and I definitely agree: Black women do tend to be great at giving compliments. It’s not just the specific words, but how it’s said. There’s a confidence and charisma and enthusiasm that just makes any kind word feel so authentic, and lets the recipient really feel good about themselves. Like magic. One of my daughter’s all time favorite people is her pre-K teacher, who gives her these really genuine compliments most days when I drop her off, about her hat or her boots or whatever she’s brought for show and tell that day. Just so sincere, fun, and heartfelt. My daughter’s smile lights up each time. This teacher makes my daughter feel seen and confident and proud of herself in a way that nobody else seems to do. It’s awesome to watch and your haiku conjures all that up beautifully. The effect even works on grown men. I often sort of dislike getting compliments from strangers, but with Black women I can’t help grinning ear to ear like a little kid who did a good job. I don’t know if you’ll agree with this last bit, but in my experience: if Black women’s compliments hit different, Black grandmas compliments are at the next level. I don’t know exactly why that is but getting any kind of approval from a Black Grandma really is just the best.
