The Wind is Surely Asking Something

For The Unnecessary Line Challenge

By Gabriel HuizengaPublished 5 days ago Updated 5 days ago 1 min read
Top Story - February 2026

The wind is surely asking something;

it raps meekly on my old window.

Should ever I deign to answer it,

I fear where it might ask me to go.

*

To follow it upward, heaven-bound?

To trek across hell-scapes, below?

To bear brothers-in-arms back homeward?

- or to leave my own mind-currents' flow?

*

To sing with it tunes upon glaciers?

To weep with it, 'longside a willow?

To dance with it across the deserts?

- to invite you, dear friend, to follow?

*

Mayhaps she seeks only company;

Open port, to alight, as a crow,

and kindness proffered to a stranger

too rare, the hospitable home's glow.

*

She could shatter the glass like nothing.

*

The wind is surely asking something;

it raps gently on my old window.

Should ever I deign to answer it,

I wonder where it might ask me to go.

    Why am I hearing this Nick Drake/Ron Sexsmith song so clearly now?

    Love how the beginning circles around at the end. It's amazing how we can appreciate something as simple as the wind. Great poetry/lyrics Gabe! And the unnecessary line makes you wonder about that shift in tone.

    This is beautiful Gabriel. The unnecessary line is stunting but also makes perfect sense. Really lovely piece x

    I'm with John and Matty on this one and your work in general. Always something special. Always takes me on a journey and gives me much to think about. The wind is a troublesome travel companion and guide but i.think we all have that incline towards imagining where it might take us. I know I do. Congrats on the deserved Top Story, sir!

  • A whimsical poem… delightful feel & jolting unnecessary line. ✅

    That line just shatters that wistful peace that you've created, never mind glass! She's an unpredictable thing, the wind. I loved this, Gabriel, as always.

  • Once again….one of the most elite poets on the platform

    Yours are the sort of poems where I might find myself or just as easily get lost and never find my way home again. To ride on the back of the wind is the ultimate adventure. Wonderful entry to the challenge, Gabriel!
