I sit by the bed and watch you breathe,

your chest, rising and falling

with the rhythm of my soul.

Your hand in mine,

a hint of a smile forms on your lips,

and I can’t help but wonder

if you’re inhaling memories

as you're exhaling time.

Oh, Cathy! This is just the most fragile picture! I feel like I say this a lot on your pieces but it’s something that’s consistently striking to me, the final two lines are just incredible. You really know how to bring us into the moment and with those final lines leave us breathless

This is so tender and heartbreaking, yet beautifully written. That last line—inhaling memories as you're exhaling time—hits right in the soul. Poignant and powerful.

  • Evocative of all that is heartfelt. I cannot help but wonder what memories flood your mind as you ponder theirs.

  • Inhaling memories and exhaling time, I especially loved that!
