We Thought We Knew
for The Unnecessary Line
You thought me how life could be —
That you could be you, and I could be me.
We thought we knew how everything works.
We thought we knew… but we’re all jerks.
We don’t know anything and never will!
So, day to day, we try to go on.
One day at a time, to keep ourselves strong.
Going about… going about in the mind,
Going about, going about… to try and make something rhyme.
One day at a time…
I guess that’s it.
One day at a time, for us all of us to fit.
And at least when I turn toward the fire,
I’ll know I did what I could to push us all higher!
