Dutch artist Piet Mondrian was a pioneer in the field of abstract art. His modern artwork was characterized by geometric shapes and primary colors. The artist is renowned for his distinctive style; his oeuvre reflects an amazing exploration of harmony, balance, and the essence of form. Mondrian not only revolutionized the visual arts but also laid the groundwork for the development of abstract expressionism and minimalist aesthetics in the 20th century.

Created in 1923, Composition A shows Mondrian’s mature style and his constant pursuit of geometric purity. In this artwork he reduces forms to their essential elements and uses primary colors and black lines to create a dynamic interplay of shapes. The grid structure is used as a framework for the artist’s exploration of balance and rhythm to achieve a sense of equilibrium.

Created in 1920, No. VI/Composition No. II shows Mondrian’s mature style with iconic grid compositions and primary colors. In this artwork he used black lines to create a grid structure and used primary colors in the blocks. Each of the elements has been precisely positioned to achieve a sense of balance and order, reflecting Mondrian’s belief in the universal principles of equilibrium and harmony.

Created in 1918, Composition of Gray and Light Brown reflects the artist’s continued exploration of balance and harmony with geometric abstraction. Here Mondrian makes use of a palette of muted tones, focusing on the interaction between the shapes and lines to create equilibrium. He had a constant quest for universal harmony.

Created in 1921, Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray, and Blue is an artwork that shows the artist’s mastery of geometric abstraction and use of primary colors. (pictured above) The large red plane calls for attention and is offset by blocks of yellow, black, gray, and blue arranged precisely in a grid structure.

Created in 1930, Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow is among Mondrian’s most iconic artworks. It encapsulates his aesthetic principles and philosophical beliefs. In this artwork, he reduces forms to their purest essence and makes use of primary colors and black lines to precisely arrange a grid pattern. It precisely shows the artist’s abstract art style.

Created in 1911 The Gray Tree is another significant step the artist took toward abstraction. He departs from vivid hues and takes up a subdued color scheme that is dominated by shades of gray. In this painting the artist keeps to geometric purity and visual harmony.

Created in 1915, Pier and Ocean (Composition No. 10) shows the artist’s shift toward pure abstraction. He shows his fascination with dynamic balance and movement. In this artwork Mondrian explored the interplay between horizontal and vertical lines. It suggests the rhythmic motion of waves and the structure of the pier. The colors are limited to primary hues.

Created in 1910, The Red Tree is an oil-on-canvas that captures a transitional moment in the career of the artist when he shifted from representational to abstract art. In this artwork he infused the landscape with vibrant colors, especially the striking red of the tree.

Created in 1921, Tableau I shows the artist exemplifying his iconic grid compositions and his exploration of the primary colors. In this artwork, he creates a harmonious balance between horizontal and vertical lines, punctuated by blocks of red, yellow, black, gray, and blue. He refines his visual language to express universal truths through abstract form.

Created in 1926, Tableau I, Lozenge with Four Lines and Gray is a continuation of Mondrian’s exploration of geometric abstraction and spatial relationships. In this artwork the artist introduces a lozenge shape that is intersected by four black lines against a gray backdrop.
