The Cost of Existing
I sat groaning at the table by Vinny's breakfast shop. I normally loved this place because of the great view. Unlike many of the full-on restaurants on the promenade that held expansive views of the stars all around us, Vinny's faced inward and let me look over the entirety of the workings of K-Rax, and I loved it.

The winter storm came on fast and hard. Luckily it was almost closing time, and it was a slow enough day that I could get the end-of-day cleanup done before locking the gate and heading out. Within the hour, you could barely see across the parking lot of the mall to the road beyond.

Crossing the Alameda border, I reached up and knocked twice on the car ceiling with my curled index and middle fingers. “Why do you do that?” Cynthia twirled a section of her long, coppery tresses; it was a fidget that I had long grown to love. She was perfect—literally everything that I had asked for. A redhead who looked like she had it all together and was a little crazy in the best way: great with fixing cars, loved dogs, and had a huge heart. She was amazing, and once again I looked at her and felt like the luckiest man alive.

Relocated
There was nothing but this brown dust as far as the eye could see. Its dry, clay-like texture choked my senses. I would have sighed, but that would have meant sucking in a mouthful of whatever this crud was. And the air—don’t get me started on the air… all I could smell was excrement… everywhere.
