One Urban Dictionary definition (I know, an odd choice of dictionary) defines it as: “to socialize with your friends, whether it is of your choosing or not; most of the time the term is used to refer to a type of fun.” Hanging out consists of doing something with friends, family, or acquaintances outside work, school, etc.
