The Cave Part 7
"I would like to ask some questions," I finally responded after a long moment of hesitation. I could feel the being that occupied the black cave. Now that I was no longer starved and delirious as I was the last time I was here, I could reach out with my senses into the darkness and picture something in my mind's eye. A great shape in the cave, vast in its size just as the voice had said of itself before. Yet, there was a terrible stillness about the creature. I say creature, because it was impossible to feel that presence was truly a person as I or any other humanoid.

The Cave Part 6. Top Story - February 2026.
If you have ever heard a tale about yourself that you cannot remember and doubtless think is made up, you will know how I felt when Tharkin related all that the eagle had seen of me before my memories were scattered. Of far distances and traveling companions that I did not recall, camping out under the stars and making our way to the mountains with deliberate purpose. The great bird had lost contact with my party once we entered the forests, and the seven other members were not seen again by him or his brethren since.

The Cave Part 5
Tharkin never answered my question. I tried to get him to interpret the vision I had seen in the smoke, but he claimed he had not seen what I had. This was no more satisfying for me than it would be for anyone else, but after several days of working with him maintaining the extensive gardens and tending to the livestock, I learned that he was master of what he would reveal and when. If I wanted to learn more of the voice in the cave, I would have to seek it out, or stumble on the answer in my own time.

The Cave Part 4
Later, after we had washed up thoroughly, I sat with Tharkin for the vegetable soup and light green tea. I was famished after waking, but my stomach was also much smaller than it had been, and eating too much made me feel nauseous. The meat I was craving, no longer sounded good as I simply tried to keep down what I had. Rice was also offered, and that helped calm my stomach.

The Cave Part 3
Everyone knows that feeling. Your eyes open, often after a very satisfying rest, and all you do is stare at the ceiling for a time while just listening for sounds and trying to interpret what they are. Sometimes there is nothing but silence, and that can be a little unnerving. Fortunately that is not what I woke too. I could hear the steady flow of water, if slightly muffled by the sliding wood door to my right. Sunlight illuminated the room, finding every chink in the buildings make up, a few beams falling directly on my feet. They thus glowed brightly, and I flexed them a little, watching my toes curl in the pleasant warmth.

The Cave Part 2
I walked a long time in the pale light that stretched from the other end of the cave. It seemed to get further away the longer I walked, and the gentle rise eventually turned into steps. I had begun to count them as I went, but then the number escaped me. Weariness sucked at my legs and feet, and for one moment I felt I was passing through water that threatened to push me back and under, but then I reached the opening. The light was so strong and bright, I wanted to cover my eyes for the longest time.

The Cave Part 1. Top Story - December 2025.
"What happened to me?" The question hung in the air, damp and hollow as it was. I felt the closeness of the walls, solid and deep. There was no echo. No hope that a simple voice could impede the silent dark. It surrounded me, gathered up and rolled over me with a blanket of complete forgetfulness. I was gone. Dead. To all who knew me, lost years ago. This is what happens to bones. This is what happens to those buried and left to lie beneath the earth until the end of time.

The Cry in the Water Part 8. Top Story - October 2025.
It had been waiting for them. Quietly, patiently, waiting for them. In a moment of retrospect, Jayr realized that it had probably been there for the last few minutes or more after locating their foot falls or the sounds of their voices. The creature was intelligent, cunning and beyond subtle when it wanted to be. Only now that it had been revealed, did the creature allow the translucent nature of its scales to regain their original color. A dark black shade, polished surface like obsidian, covered the creature entirely. Only it yellow eyes, large great orbs with vertical slits like a cat, stood out against the inky blackness of its body, and these burned with intense focus.
