Carl and Jaylene carried Denny and Jenny, while Adam received a piggyback ride from Thomas. Agent “Don’t call me Rance” Cochran led the way, carrying Felix inside his carrier. Carl soon saw why they had to go in on foot; the nearer they walked to the Big Blue River, the muckier the ground became.

The Ford Expedition they had been forced to choose had much less space than the Suburban, and with its bright red paint, the Ford stood out.

The children were asleep in the seat in front of them, and Carl could see Jaylene staring moodily out of the passenger window as the other agent, Special Agent Cochran, maneuvered the SUV through the sparse traffic. Now and then, Felix would mew loudly from his cage in the cargo area, and Barker would nose Carl’s neck or shoulder to remind him that he was still back there, Carl supposed.
