Releasing Birds
Three days ago, a bird flew down the woodstove pipe. My husband threatened me with harm if I ever again dismantled the stove pipe to release a bird, then he epoxied the sections together. The failing fluttering I hear makes the need to help greater. Moving cautiously, I slowly open the damper, the baffle, the doors, and the hinged lid, then softly sweep along the stove damper with the ash broom. Out pops a sooty bird. After several flights around the room, it soars out the already open door- free after days of struggling, scraping wings. I can help them.
