I turn, watching the sleek skirts swish smoothly about my legs. “It’s beautiful.” I whisper. “It suits you.” My soon-to-be mother-in-law says, coming up behind me with a flower wreath in her hands. She settles it into my hair, smoothing the streamers along my back. I fidget with my sleeves.

I set one foot carefully in front of the other, crouching behind Liara as she leads the way down the tunnel. Pierie hovers behind me, the others close behind her. I swat my hand at her, nudging her back. If I have to turn and run, I’ll trample her.

A Perfect Night. Content Warning.
“Oh!” Followed by a crash as pieces scatter across the table and floor. I wince, clutching my cup against the sudden loud noise. Everyone else clustered around the table throws their arms up as Travis jumps up. “Mystery shot!” he announces over the blasting pop music coming from the TV mounted to the wall behind him.

The darkening sky swept over my head like a large fluffy blanket, making the edges of my awareness fuzzy. Black, skeletal outlines rushed by outside as the car engine hummed. The three boys crammed in the back seat slumbered quietly, with only an occasional soft noise as one of them tried to shift to a more comfortable position, only to knock one or both of the others.
