She could see the gadget buzzing and she could see the fear in her son's face. "Don't answer it," she said. He looked pleadingly at her and all she wanted to do was take him in her arms and assure him it would be okay. But this wasn't school nor a problem which could be solved with a word to the teacher. This was life and death, she could tell. You didn't get through wars without knowing a dire situation when it arrived.

She woke in the morning and thought that there was something different about her appearance but couldn't quite put her finger on it. Malcolm's heart filled with dread. Anna was standing in front of him and her face was full of shock and bewilderment. Being a Perceptive meant that she was more sensitive than most. He had such guilt attached to her and who she was. He was trying to be a better father to her, now that they were away from danger.
