But when the home team drove their lunch pail down the field for a 3-0 lead, a lingering doubt quieted the crowd. The sideline was another matter.

Somers Plays to Exciting 2-2 Tie Versus North Salem
See Photos at end On Tuesday September 17, Somers hosted North Salem and coming across town as the defending state champs obviously added some juice to the rivalry. Physical on both sides, said Coach Rob Carreira, “I think a little bit of emotion from the game got to us at points.” But the end result proved the boys kept an overall even keel.

Somers Plays its Cards Right in 2-1 Victory Over Greeley
Photos are at end of article On Friday September 5, Somers and Greeley were knee deep in a defensive struggle at the high school. A 1-1 game with eight minutes to play, Somers lined up for a penalty shot, and at this point in the season, Coach Brian Lanzetta paused on a strategy. “It’s early to show your cards,” he said. But a league game, versus a AA team, the moment got the better of him.

Girls Soccer Team Opens with 5-0 Win over North Salem
See Photos at end of article On Wednesday September 3, John Jay opened the season versus North Salem and kept the ball in the Tiger zone for most of the first half. The Wolves only managed one goal, though, and when Jennifer Killeen emerged with the ball in front, a tie seemed a distinct possibility. “She made a great diving save,” said Carly Mangiaracina of Brooke Epstein. But the game was still too close for comfort and was the topic of conversation at halftime.

Somers Falls 4-1 to Pleasantville in Season Opener
See Photos at end of article On Thursday, September 4, Somers traveled to Pleasantville for the season opener, and it didn’t take long to see what they were up against. Garvin Kayizzi chased a cross pass into the corner, danced the confined space and blasted a shot along the goal line. Nicholas Chao was there, but the wing wasn’t done.
