Part II : A Look Back at 2019 John Jay Football - vs Panas and Beacon
John Jay 49 Panas 17 Coming into Friday night’s game at Walter Panas, John Jay has enjoyed three blowouts. The offense explodes in all directions, and the defense stands down everything in their way. But football is a three dimensional game, and Head Coach Jimmy Clark geared his lesson plan as such this week. “We put emphasis on special teams,” said Clark, and the kicking game responded with three touchdowns in tallying a 49-17 rout.

Somers Rides Four Matthew Pires Touchdowns to 28-6 Victory
For the bulk of last night’s game between Somers and Sleepy Hollow, the end zone didn’t have a lot of company from the 70 players suited up at the High School. But when one breaks the plane four times, it's more about the company you keep, and Wide Receiver Matthew Pires happily obliged to be on the receiving end in Somers' 28-6 victory.

Part II : JJ Abrams' Star Trek Movies are Being Held to a Higher Science Fiction Standard
Here's my second installment on this subject. I have long agreed that Star Trek (2009) was pretty light on the serious science fiction subject manner. But I've recently had a change of heart, and here I go again gladly defending JJ Trek.

Mahopac Umpire Is Still at It After 50 Between the Lines
A basketball referee who is as youthful looking as 91 year old Bob Manning could easily go unnoticed as teams set up in the half court offense. On the other hand, when games goes up tempo his lag was hard to miss - especially from one very pertinent individual. “They would start the fast break and were all going past me before I got to half court. So I felt I was cheating the girls,” said Manning. “They gave me a party and I retired.” But Manning still does have both a whistle and well functioning right thumb, and he continues to put them to good use.

Campbell Scott and the Disappointments - Please Come Back to Katonah
Andy Keir of the Katonah band - The Disappointments - has always had an interest in the bass guitar. That doesn't mean in the pursuit of that interest he ever owned one or any other musical instrument. So about six years ago, he traded in the air guitar strings on his tennis racquet for an actual bass. Its calling, though, still did not arrive until several of his Mahopac High School buddies found themselves faced with the disappointment of midlife and started a band. "They had two guitars, a singer and they needed a bass," Keir said. So his friends told him he had to learn to play the thing, and today 40 (or 45), never sounded so good.

Trump’s Excesses Exhaust, but Those That Made Us Feel Complacent Have Proven Far Worse
Donald Trump has been President for three years now, and I so want a new one. I am certainly not alone, and the multitudes can list the reasons ad infinitum. I’m with them. But I have one very selfish reason that elevates above all others. I’m exhausted and need a break.

Tribeca Resident Mirrors the Origins of Human Expression on Buildings Across New York City with His Graffiti
Photo courtesy of Robert Janz Looking across the landscape of New York City and seeing all the graffiti on our buildings could lead to a rather low born opinion. The idle minds behind the scrawls carry a mentality not much more evolved than those of a Neanderthal. 86 year old Robert Janz of Tribeca counts himself among NYC artists who add to the scenery and would not only consider the critique a compliment but sees the perception as pretty insightful.

As a Huge Fan of 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', the Big Screen Experience Proves a Letdown
After 10 years in rerun wilderness, Star Trek: The Motion Picture rolled out in the winter of 1979. I saw the TV commercials, and I was ready to take the conn with old crew and newly engaged engines. But the reviews were bad, and when my brother asked me to go see it, I declined. I eventually saw TMP on TV—save a bit too much gasping at the gas cloud—I absolutely loved it. So the omission became a lifelong regret that I didn’t see it in the theaters, and when 40 years triggered a new theatrical release, I knew what I had to do. As it turns out, that decision may have been in error.

Greed, Not Title IX, Responsible for the Cutting of Men's Sports Programs
I’ve played sports my whole life. They are a teacher, a test of character and provide an outlet that helps guide us along the journey of life. But this human necessity had been disproportionally denied our sisters—until Title IX was passed. In recent years, though, the landmark legislation has come under criticism. Organizations like the College Sports Council (CSC) claim that striving for women’s equality has unfairly resulted in numerous cuts to men’s sports programs. Wrestling, men’s gymnastics, and tennis are typically among the programs that leave men out in the cold. But before I flush out the facts, let’s cherish the history first.

How Much Is Too Much Competitive Youth Sports
You don’t have to go too far to hear parents lamenting the busy sports schedules they endure with their kids. I only wish I could have grown up in such a culture because there was an awful lot of sitting around in the 70s. Still, there must be a middle ground, and I wonder what the impact is when adults are always involved.
