Tips for Beginner Drummers
A lot of people decide they want to learn to play drums early on in life; many as children or teens, who eventually go into music programs in school and learn a lot from that. For some of us, however, it is not that easy. I started drumming at the age of 27, and for me, that made it much harder in the beginning. Although I had taken chorus and marching band in high school, I had never attempted or tried to play the drums before, so a lot of things that I thought I knew about drumming were totally different than I expected. In spite of that fact, one thing was for sure; there was nothing like the feeling of playing my first beat. There is something to be said for the passion, elation, and extreme high that learning to play the drums gives us. That is what has kept me going for the past couple of years.

How Childhood Neglect Impacts Adults
Today, I wanted to take the time to talk about something that is really important to me: childhood neglect and abuse. For the longest time in my life, I felt the need to justify what happened to me, to think "well, it's my fault", or "there's something wrong with me", or "my parents aren't terrible people maybe I'm just imagining my mistreatment". The thing is, the older I've gotten, the more I've learned of the complex impacts of childhood neglect and abuse. It's not always easy to detect because we are confused as kids; we don't know that what's being done to us is wrong. The families where this happens are sometimes the kinds of families that look alright from the outside world, but instead are deeply hurting. That's what my experience with childhood neglect and abuse was like. I was isolated in my room a lot, a witnessed physical abuse, and listened to arguments constantly.
