UP The Down Staircase
I shall now narrate a tale of someone who is me, yet not me! All my life, as long as I can remember, I have had the same recurring dream, or nightmare, depending on one's interpretation of the events. I would happily arrive with my parents, who were not my real parents, but my dream parents, at the dark, foreboding, yet starkly beautiful house built on a vast expanse of land. We would somehow arrive at the front door, it would open and my slightly aging, still strikingly beautiful dream aunt would walk hurriedly out, smiling broadly and enveloping us into her warm and welcoming hugs. Her silver-grey hair floated down her shoulders freely, with no restraint or apology, giving her an air of quiet grace and poise as she urgently ushered us her into her home.

Vocal’s Lost Communities. Top Story - November 2023.
For those who are unaware or have never counted them, Vocal has 48 communities available for writers to post their work in. The most popular of these by far are Poetry with 40,097 writers and Fiction with 31,637 writers. These numbers come from Vocal’s website and I’m sure they fluctuate from week to week, possibly day to day. These two groups generate most stories published on the site. What I found fascinating is how many Top Stories these two communities garner in a thirty-day period.

Oops!
In a study conducted in 2019, a group of over 400 participants engaged in the process of learning a new and fictitious language. The learning process involved the presentation of three pairs of symbols or runes, with questions such as determining which of the pair represented an animal. After a short break, they were asked the same questions but with a twist – this time, they had to identify which of the runes represented non-living objects. However, what made this learning game unique was that the participants' responses in the first round shaped the meanings of the runes in the second round.
