Boxed In: Breaking Through
We tumbled a short way into blackness before landing on a cold hard surface. Slowly the room grew lighter until we could see our surroundings clearly. As we looked around there was no longer any sign of the opening we'd come through. We were inside an eight foot cube and all the surfaces were mirrors. On all four walls, the ceiling, and the floor we saw our own reflections continuing on forever as the mirrors created an infinity loop. But slowly the trailing reflections began to change. They were still copies of the two of us, but now they were different scenes, memories of our lives together, and each wall seemed to have its own theme.

I sat there for several moments trying to process everything that Aunt Mina had said. A curse put on the family by my Aunt Renee? This "shadow" that would try to drag my mom under the bed? It definitely sounded like something that could be induced by too much drinking. Maybe Aunt Mina was right? Maybe it was just my mom freaking out over old memories and hallucinations brought on by drinking too much? But... when mom was screaming and freaking out at me... she was sober. She hadn't drank any alcohol that night before bed... something was not adding up.

Boxed In: Nothingness
We both jumped to our feet. Instinctively, I reached for his hand. It had been so long since we had touched, I considered pulling away immediately. But he grasped it with fierce protectiveness and my heart skipped a beat at the memory his touch stirred. He once had been my safe place, long ago. I needed that now.

Before It Ends. Content Warning.
When we are children everything seems to have a conspiracy or scary story around it. We make up stories of the things that go bump in the night. We have such a naïve side that we often believe the stories we tell, exaggerating them more each time they are shared with our friends. Sometimes we make up stories based on bits and pieces that we hear the adults around us talking about, and other times we take actions based on those bits and pieces, not realizing what a mistake that can be.

Work in Progress
Chloë and Luca spent the rest of that Thanksgiving weekend evening on the dance floor and, to Chloë’s absolute delight, exchanged telephone numbers and addresses for future correspondence. Chloë had always been a prolific letter writer, but she promised herself she would pace her communication with him. For his part, Luca wasn’t much for the written form, but he had her phone number and fully planned for a get-together when Chloë was back at university. He knew she lived with her parents so he’d have to play it cool, but he was taken – finally, Chloë thought – with her and planned to see her often, if that was something she’d want. He hoped that, on his return to university the following year, they would build on their budding relationship.

The Orphans in the Woods
Rohan washed the dishes and put them away. He was grateful that his sister had cooked dinner. It wasn't as good as Mom's cooking, but for her first try it wasn't that bad. She'd get better.
