tv review
Big crimes, small screen; true crime television series and TV documentaries that recreate and reexamine some of the mystifying and grisliest cases in history.
In Search of the Gentleman Thief
One of my favourite literary stock characters is that of the “gentleman thief.” The recent release of Lupin on Netflix shows that there are many others who are equally charmed by the concept. Who doesn’t love the idea of an outlaw, living by his own specific rules and meting out justice in a way that cuts the wealthy and powerful down to size.

One cop show after another
Cop shows. I grew up on cop shows. From Hill Street Blues to NYPD Blue, I loved them! I couldn’t get enough of them. Although Hill Street Blues was a really good show, I must say that there are some amazing cop shows that have happened in the last few years.

Hey! College Admissions Don’t Come Cheap!
There’s a throwaway line midway through the scary-good Netflix exposé Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal that sums everything you ever wanted to know about college entrance scams but were afraid to ask. Somebody someone behind-the-scenes says a prominent Hollywood actress’ daughter had grades good enough to get into the college of her choice on her own merit, without her well-to-do mom intervening on her behalf by paying a scammy college admissions facilitator to game the system on her behalf.

Mystery Makes Madness
I personally have an incredibly difficult time finding video content that I genuinely want to watch, let alone binge watch. Netflix’s recommendations always seem a bit off, Hulu never seems to have enough variety, and any woman can only take so much Disney+. When I tell you that the recommendation I am about to give was the result of a halfhearted scroll through Amazon Prime Video on a lonely Thursday night, only made possible because of a free trial that I was already planning on canceling, I’m sure you can gather the kind of expectations and tone I had toward any kind of content on that particular streaming platform. However, the very low expectations I had were quickly shattered as I began the series and then tore through all 10 episodes within a 2-day timeframe, completely invested in the story laid out before me.

Does Crime Pay?
***Spoiler Alert*** This contains spoilers to major storylines of three popular series. I know we are supposed to be comparing two series or movies, but I decided to write on three great series, which I find to have similarities. If you like Breaking Bad then you will like Ozark, then you will like Good Girls.

Netflix's Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer (2021)
The world is in awe of serial killers. In awe in the sense that we set ourselves apart from these animals, these “monstrosities” to make ourselves feel better and safe. Yet, we still find something undeniably intriguing about them. Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer aims to show us every angle as two Los Angeles detectives recount their experience of hunting down Richard “The Night Stalker” Ramirez, one of the most prolific serial killers in American history.

The 13th Amendment
“In America, we have not ended racial caste, just redesigned it.” – Michelle Alexander, author of “The New Jim Crow” Mass incarceration is a social issue that continues to plague our country, particularly people of color. "13", A Netflix documentary covering this topic tells the narrative of how we got to this point as a country and a society- incarcerating 2.3 billion people in the U.S. With this being the highest incarceration rate in the world, we house about ¼ of the human population in our prisons. The 13th amendment states,

The Reality of Documentaries
If you are like me, I can settle in and watch a real-life crime documentary for hours. It draws me in. Did they do it? How did they get away with it for so long? Of course, they did it! There wouldn’t be a documentary on it if they hadn’t done it right? Or they didn’t do it, and it’s a documentary on a false confession. Or maybe it was all a set-up!
