After conducting my first search on Kale, we hadn’t spoken to each other in three days. We hadn’t physically seen each other within that time frame either, and I was grateful. I needed a break from him before I felt like he consumed my entire being down to my cellular structure. The first day he didn’t show himself around I thought for sure he’d be lurking about. I was on edge constantly thinking of him, looking for him. I expected him to be in the elevator or waiting for me down in the lobby. Every hour, I waited for Connor to call me to say the boss man wanted to speak with me.

We made it back to the office with fifteen minutes to spare. Donald and I cackled like idiots as we worked together and the day began to go by in an instant. We had fun going over Kale’s schedule and creating spreadsheets for events and meetings. Donald prepared me for the upcoming summer conference happening in a few weeks. He said every summer, marketing companies from all over California gather to network and feel out the competition.

Donald kept me busy through the morning after the meeting. We went over some of the critical aspects of the meeting and things Kale wanted to focus on. I got the majority of the social media outlets completed for the newly named Erickson Enterprises while working on my separate tasks for Cambridge. We bulldozed through our assignments now that we had some sense of direction after the meeting. Donald was definitely in a better mood, which made being in his proximity much better.

I could have died twice and still wouldn’t have been satisfied when I saw Kale walking into the room to sit at the head of the table. My heart jolted like a shot to the chest, my ribcage bruising from the brutal pounding, and I instantly started flame-flicking under the table.

The alarm on my phone went off at six-thirty. I showered in fifteen minutes and made it to my closet with forty-five minutes to spare. I decided I would go for a simple gray pantsuit. If I were being honest with myself, I liked the way my butt looked in the pants. They were form fitting without looking too casual and were work appropriate. I figured on my first day I could highlight a part of myself I’m pretty confident in without overdoing it.

Three months later in July. I woke with a start to the sound of movement in my apartment and the smell of good food cooking in my kitchen. It was too early to start cooking, and I knew it had to be no one other than my busybody mother checking up on me. I heard voices murmuring within the walls of the apartment and I knew right away it wasn’t just my mother who invited herself in but my entire family.

I’m Maxine Luchessi and I’m a pyrokinetic telepath. I’m different and I don’t mean it in the cool way where everyone wants to express their individuality through their mutual need to stand out. Everyone claims they’re one of a kind and there’s no one else in the world like them, which is fine. But how far does individuality go before you find someone just like you? Explain doppelgangers. I mean, out of all the people in the world one can’t simply be the only one in the world.
