How We Make Our Superstitions Real
Superstition has been defined as “a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief.” In common terms, superstition is a belief held by many without reason or fact behind it. For some, that can include magical influence; for others, it is a generational tradition. What many don’t know is that the brain has the power to make these superstitions real.

This weekend I celebrated the successful completion of my first-ever Arduino-powered project, a dance costume sleeve that changes colour as the dancer moves. This weekend I also found out that the Afghani competitors in this year's FIRST Global robotics competition, a team of six young women, were at last granted permission to enter the United States in order to join their robot for the competition.

Twitch. It started with the sound of rushing water. The window was open, you could feel the fresh air, only it was warm, it didn’t feel as refreshing as it would seem. The curtains were laced, reaching just above the height of the faucet. The sleeves of her violet blouse were rolled. Molly had just put the last dish in the rack to dry when she heard the TV click on in the other room. But only static was heard, and a cuss under a man’s breath. She wandered into the living room, seemingly unphased. She recognized the familiar voice.

Chasing Fate
It was not even 7:30 am, and she already felt the warmth of the sun on her face. That’s what you get out here, even in early December, thought Amelia, as she swung her Plymouth convertible out onto the flight line, past a long line of olive green P-40s, parked wingtip - to - wingtip. Carl Sagan's 'Billions & Billions'
More than two decades after his untimely passing, Carl Sagan's life and work continue to resonate. The famous documentary series Cosmos, which helped to make him the best-known scientist of his time, was revised and updated just a couple of years ago, introducing him to a new generation that might not even have been born when he passed away. Yet in reading Billions & Billions, a posthumously published collection of his essays from 1997 which I encountered earlier this year, I found myself struck by just how much this particular set of his work remains surprisingly relevant today.

The escape was not difficult. The alarms were broken and the hole in the Fence had grown since I’d last looked. Snatches of cloth caught on the wire, loose strands. More people breaking free from here, running from the hell we’ve realised isn’t normal. Isn’t how we want to live. We never see the Runners again. They might be dead for all we know. Dead or there. Elysium, rumours call it. The light at the end of our tunnel. The beginning of our new lives. It might not even exist. All we know is that anywhere’s better than here.

Chemical Mind
The brain is the most mysterious and highly complex device in the known universe, being composed of over 100 billion neurons, each with 10,000 or more possible connections, forming an astounding 100 trillion connections called synapses. Unlike other body cells, neurons never touch each other; instead, they are separated by gaps only 20-40 nanometers wide (to put this to scale, a piece of paper is roughly 100,000nm wide). Remember, these numbers don't include the neurons that exist within your body, some of which being as long as the distance from your head to your big toe!
