Neve Campbell's Still A Scream Baby
My honest opinion without spoiling it, and why it worth seeing.
Scream 7
Do you like scary movies? But the voice is the famous graveled voice of Ghost Face! Meaning, once again, the goofy faced killer is back for another round of slashing and slicing through teenagers and anyone that get's in his, or her, way? Yep, as the Scream series has proven, you never know if it's a lady or a not-so-gentleman behind the mask.
So, let's get into the ups and downs of the newest Scream Movie and decide whether it's something you can't wait to see on streaming or is it just another "nah," at the theaters that's going to die and end up on digital by the end of the week?
As of now, the newest Scream has a moderately good start with just over 100,000,000 world wide. Not bad for a horror movie, especially one that came out in February. January and February are traditionally where Hollywood releases movies that are expected to die quickly, much like any seventeen year old girl that's friends with the main characters in the Scream franchise.
One would have to guess that the reason for it to have done this well, so far, is the return of perennial favorite, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell.) Campbell, who was absent from Scream 6, and will get a chance to answer for her absence during the New York Ghost Face attacks, is found in a new town, living her life, and enjoying the headaches and struggles of parenting a teenage daughter who for all intents and purposes is a carbon copy of a young Sidney.
This Scream is different!
How The Hell Is Stu Back?
It's a great question, and one you'll have to see the movie to find the answer to, but it's so well done that the how they did it is less fun than the effect of his return from the grave. That's right! Stu, one of the original baddies from the Scream series, the guy we last saw with a large screen TV landing on his face, returns and helps the franchise return to form.
From ghost Billy to Stu returning, the past couple of outings have proven two things to the fans.
1. What worked in the 90s and early 00s works today.
2. Fans of the series don't take it very seriously.
So the infamous Stu Macher returns and there's no better place for him to start things up again than at the Macher house in Woodsboro. But don't worry, he finds his way to good old Sidney's neck of the woods and let's her know he's there. It's a little out of sort for the franchise, but Sidney's survived five outings, multiple stabbings, and nearly every member of her family trying to kill her since the first installment in the long running horror franchise.
As stated above, Sid is now living her life, running a business, married to a cop, and raising her children. As Sidney Evans, she's got everything all together until the phone rings and she's soon reintroduced to Ghost Face, who video chats with her and announces not only is he back, but he's outside of her daughters school.
By this point, none of the franchise regulars are to be trifled with if you're smart, and Sidney, true to form, calls in the calvary and rushes to the high school with her gun and wits as she prepares to face off the with her past. Daughter Tatum (Isable May) proves to be as much of a problem child as any of the original Woodsborough kids, and is desperate to change from being useless to being a fighter.
Then, the expected happens! The not so shocking return of Gale Weathers, the intrepid news woman. She shows up with her new assistants Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown.)
With the entire surviving cast of the past back together, Sidney, and the woman she's grown to think of as a trusted friend, set out to find the truth. How is Stu Macher back and much like the rest of the franchise, who's helping him.
Overally, Scream 7 returns to the teenaged slasher genre with a bang. It embraces the early days of horror, the untouchable subjects of teenaged angst, and the desperation for recognition and fame the movies has played off of, while introducing viewers to the potential future of the franchise.
Oh yes, there's bound to be more Scream adventures, as the studios have obviously decided to pay Neve Campbell and Courteny Cox what they're worth and keep old Ghost Face going strong for as long as fans will ooh and ahh at the sometimes comedic killers antics.
Overall, Scream 7 is a fun watch with few issues. I'm giving it a four out of five star rating for the franchise and would put it above Scream 5 and 6 for quality. Honestly, it's a better horror outing than Scream 3, which was the one where they went Meta and did the entire horror film turning into a blood bath.
