Super Girl Passed By
I arrived late in the day at the strange makeshift alien outpost. The outpost, nestled in a large hotel ballroom, was only here for the weekend. It was one of the small regional comic conventions, the kind they have every few months in this part of the country. Alien, because it was peopled with the usual array of costumed characters. Crowds at these events usually consist of adorable face-painted kids in homemade costumes, teens too cool to get dressed up, and the hardcore fans in full cosplay. Often the latter are clad in plastic storm trooper uniforms, ghost buster jumpsuits, or federation red and black. These folks don’t come out of character except maybe to pose for a picture.

New Worlds
Have you ever felt like you don't just quite in? Are you the type to read a book and get so swept up in it and its characters that you feel as though you could easily fall into their world? That for a moment you could be someone completely different where the limitations of this world wouldn't be holding you back? As an avid reader I have felt this my whole life. Every book I read, every movie or TV show I watched I always found myself not only falling in love with the cute fictional boys but wishing I could embody someone else if only for a moment. Then I discovered cosplay.

'The Tudors' Costumes Part 2
We have now arrived to part two of this series of how costumes can tell a story. Much of the anger towards the costuming in Showtime's 'The Tudors' is related towards Anne Boleyn's costumes. What I find most interesting is that all people do is criticize instead of asking why her dresses were made this way. Since Anne has so many clothes, we shall be explaining her wardrobe in two parts. Part one will focus solely on her clothes from season one.

The Chess Board
When I was nine, I wanted nothing more than to learn how to play chess. This desire developed after I saw children playing the game on a television show. Unfortunately, my attempts to learn from my relatives were futile, for none of them knew how to play. Furthermore, we didn't have a chess set at home. Asking for a chess set as a gift was not an option, for I knew that pursuing pleasures was not as crucial as buying food or paying bills. However, I was not deterred by these obstacles.

A Cosplayer's Journey
I found out about the Create Your Own Happiness challenge only a few hours before the deadline, but I thought it was a great idea, and that it would be important to enter even then. To do this, I thought that I would share a bit about my happiness and where the path has led me. So first, I would like to share a little history with you.

Costuming for Work and Play
At 39 years of age I decided to go back to college and earn my degree. I had attempted to go to college several times before that. However, I was never able to finish because I suffered from severe Bipolar Disorder II and spent much of my twenties and thirties in and out of hospitals and had very little focus in my life. I was diagnosed at the age of 21 following my first suicide attempt. The diagnosis was a relief in a way, explaining why I behaved the way I did, always either languishing in hopeless despair and anxiety, unable to even leave the house or swept up in short-lived bursts of chaotic energy which often felt like I was not in control of my own actions which would find me abandoning whatever I was doing to hop on a plane or train and head half-way around the world on a whim or focus so intently on a single art project, completely neglecting every other aspect of my life such as school or work, leading to expulsion or termination.

The Tools Of Cosplay
It was March 2015 and after roughly 40 years of cosplaying for conventions and events we, Martin Hunger and I, made our first pair of mechanical wings. Maleficent had come out the year before and her outfits were stunning. The horns on top of her long locks of hair, to the wings on her back to the long Dupioni silk dress touching the ground so you barely saw her feet. She was the ideal challenge. She was the perfect next step for two cosplayers to take on.

I might be crazy but that usually works out well
When does passion become insanity? Perhaps it’s a line we each discern for ourselves. I will admit I’ve yet to find that line for myself. We can struggle to define that line or we can embrace inspiration when it presents itself and ignore the label of “crazy”. I prefer the latter, much to the amusement of my fellow crafters.

Creating my Heroes
The first time I remember dressing up as a character from a movie or show was for my Star Wars themed 8th birthday party. My mom made me a hand-sewn Princess Leia dress from Episode IV: A New Hope. I remember helping my mom cut out the fabric with her sewing scissors, and stitching together my small white hooded dress.
