"Why Don't You Talk Black?"
Being born in the late '80s and growing up in the '90s meant that black looked, sounded, and acted a certain way that I didn't always quite live up to. I sucked at basketball, wore button-ups and payless shoes, and wasn’t allowed to listen to my first rap album until the age of 17 solely because the artist had a song called "Jesus Walks;” only to have it quickly taken away because my Dad didn't want me listening to such a "lost young man."

Seven degrees
This year has been rough, and honestly, that’s an understatement. However, one thing I should have invested in at the beginning of this pandemic is streaming services, and they are blowing up. Especially because we are all stuck indoors and need some sense of normalcy and that is where we turn to the television and the lighthearted shows that might make us lose the sadness our lives have become. I don’t know about you, but this actually doesn’t sound like a punishment to me. I get to stay home and watch as many movies as I want? Yes, please. In fact, do ya’ll remember when Netflix tweeted and said, “to the 42 people who have watched ‘A Christmas Prince’ 42 times since Thanksgiving, who hurt you?” I was one of those people. Movies and shows are my life. My personality is a cacophony of literature characters and characters from shows I really enjoy.

The Deaf Role in Movies
The movie "Sound of Metal" was released on Amazon Prime in November 2020. It's about a heavy-metal drummer who loses his hearing and is struggling with drug addiction recovery. The movie shows the emotional rollercoaster of losing hearing, struggling to want it back (and getting Cochlear Implants), and learning American Sign Language (ASL).

Dark Night of the Soul
Flames... The faint, ambient sound of fire as it wafts and burns by the oxygen in the air. In a dark room, stone, large pillars connected to the ceiling high above... A crypt by all standard measurements. Lit only by four floating balls of fire in each corner and two blue flames flanked on either side of me in the center of the room where I sit kneeling on both knees. The clack of metal shoes meeting stone approaches from a large mirror that looks like it holds the void on the wall directly in front of me. My mother, in her all black robes, hood on, and laced with all her magical jewels.

The Hidden Enemy
It wasn't particularly hard to do it. All you have to be is patient. Most of the time, they come to you seeking your open gates, revealing all the treasures within your walls to ally and enemy alike. I don't exactly remember the first time I did it, or if what I did was a complete accident, but I remember the day I became a millionaire overnight. All it took was an address, somewhere so random from my own location that I had no connection to it whatsoever. Next is the bait, you. You walk right into the pack of wolves of the world, spotless and pure white, with no shepherd to protect or guide you. You wait until you hear the growls and howls. Wait until they have your scent. After that, you walk them slowly back into the pen, knowing that they'll follow.

"Why do You Read?"
You ask me why I read. You pluck the book out of my hands and away from my roving eyes, letting it flip to a random page, losing my place. You peer at the text, glance at the summary, grimace, and once again ask me why I read. You let out a disdainful snort and let the book tip out of your hand onto my desk, crumpling the pages beneath it. And as you turn back around in your seat to converse with your friends about girls and football, I pick up my second hand Mass Market Paperback, and I thumb through in search of my page, careful not to go beyond it lest my eyes glimpse the future. I return to my reading.

The Gift of Animal Crossing
Looking back on 2020, there were so many days filled with uncertainty, anxiety, and sadness. I had finally felt more comfortable in my new job and was becoming friends with my coworkers. I have a coworker, Lee, who would frequently walk to Starbucks with me in the morning and sometimes for a 3 pm pick-me-up caffeine run. Lee and I became friends and I truly appreciate having them in the office. I valued our new friendship even more when we started working remotely from home.

How Vocal Has Changed My Life. Top Story - January 2021.
It’s my 25th birthday today and I would love to say a massive thank you to Vocal because of the way it has changed my life over the course of the last couple of years. It’s not because of the clicks, or the money, or even the V+ sign that I have now, though they come into it. It’s because Vocal Media can let you reach a whole range of audiences over the media spectrum. I have had my articles shared by people I don’t know on Facebook groups, I have had some of the people included in my articles such as writers respond to me with thanks, I have gotten great responses from my articles and book reviews stating that it was very insightful and has gone on to persuade others to read the book (the most recent being “Brother Robert” by Annye C. Anderson). So I would not only like to thank Vocal Media, but I would like to celebrate my 25th birthday, on the 25th day alongside my articles of 25 films, books and albums with you - on Vocal Media.
