A Magical Modern Art Piece
A duck with twelve feet, coated with some kind of bronze paint and possibly mold. It was unimpressive, but it was an oddity, it makes sense to find it at an oddities shop. An old barber joint repurposed to house a wide variety of left behind craft projects and junkyard findings. This line of retail is a bit of a scam, you can throw any old concoction together and slap a price tag on it. They didn’t even bother to take out the swivel chairs, still bolted to the floor. Some stacked with boxes full of posters or a few dozen eccentric coats, another was set behind a counter, and on it was Phil.

The Last Stop
“EXCUSE ME SIR!” I yelled. “SIR!” “HEY! YOU WITH THE GREEN SWEATER!!” He must be in quite a rush or in his own world not to be able to hear me screaming as loud as I am. He’s in such haste; he dropped his small black notebook. Man, I really need to start working out. He’s going way too fast for me to catch up and I’m breaking a sweat. “SIR?????” I give up. I can’t catch him and I have to get to work before I’m late.

Welcome to Rainbowland
Augustine was never one for games. She cared rarely for thrill or seduction, and as far as she was concerned, those were the two reasons why anyone ever accepted an invitation to play a game. She learned that growing up in a poker house, where she and other children of self-made millionaires witnessed traders and politicians delude themselves into believing that the room was filled with reciprocity and friendship, and that love existed wherever beauty did.

Good Initiative, Bad Judgment
Valerie and Jamie finally park in front of their newest pride and joy, aka “their last hope at redemption”, a property they purchased at a county auction. Literally. It’s their last shot at salvation or else they really might just die. Dramatic but not, not true, they’re just really bad at being Millennials. (Or really good, depending on your perspective.)

Return On Investment
Jeremy never had trouble finding his zen on the job. Embedded in every photoshoot was an obligatory wave of chaos and, from fussy toddlers to snarling bridezillas on a warpath, he gracefully surfed them all. Through client or cacophony, he could always zero in on the gentle hum of photography lights and achieve nirvana within the white noise. “I want it to be tasteful, you know?” said Silas, “Something that says I get off my yacht one leg at a time.”

From Leonine to Asinine
It’s been years since I even thought about my horoscope. Raised in a very religious household (my father was a Gideon - you know - the people who put Bibles in hotel rooms), I was taught to shun anything - especially of celestial origins - that instructed me about how to live. Now, in this age of digital media, we’re subjected to a barrage of ads telling us how to live our lives - what to wear, what to eat, what not to eat, what to drive, who to love, et cetera, et cetera. Who needs a horoscope? Just turn on the TV.

Heroes
BRACE YOURSELF! Even though this story is written from my perspective, I am NOT the main character. I am not the “HERO” we need. I am not the one with the power to save the world nor am I equipped with all the most perfect traits of humility, bravery, strength, or honor. In moments where I am forced to choose between right and wrong, sometimes I have chosen wrong. Sometimes I have stood quietly, unable to respond heroically in the face of adversity. I have watched in silence as another human being suffered, unsure of how to respond… unsure of how my strength or voice could be used to prevent a tragedy from happening. I have misunderstood the Gravity of Danger. How it has the capacity to cost a precious life, and how there are always casualties when hatred is involved. For these reasons, I can say with near certainty that I am probably not the Hero that we are all severely in need of. Despite this, though, I know that I AM SOMEBODY in the Hero’s story and so are you! Perhaps you are the Hero themself and you have the ability to think of others in a way that encompasses their safety alongside your own. It takes so much sacrifice to be the kind of Hero we all need. To be the Hero of anything, any moment, is hard enough… but to be the Hero of Earth and all of its people is another thing. It is Another Level of understanding of Peace, Compassion, Love, and Devotion to the Balance of Equality that I still have trouble comprehending. A “HERO” must be anointed with some special ability to see beyond the constructs of the world as it functions around descriminitive systems and norms...and OUR Hero, for all intents and purposes, must find a way to fulfill the needs of those who are oppressed by these very systems by finding ways to dismantle them. Our Hero represents the epitome of GOOD in the face of Evil. Even if the Hero is the Final Martyr of Righteousness in contrast to the evils of the world, Our Hero (he or she) an army of people also fighting for what is right, too! But whatever our role may be, I know now that I must be an “Ally” to Our Hero when the time arises. The Hero who demonstrates incomprehensible endurance in the face of The Dangers of Evil.

Day 241
A loud knock at the door woke me from the best dream of my life. Before I even have the chance to wipe the sleep from my eyes my family have let themselves into my apartment with the spare key they had cut for ‘emergencies’. Aunty Shirl, the skinny piece with her long straight sandy blonde hair is first through the door. Uncle Benny is next and boy is he loud, he never turns off, he is just that guy that is always on. Following shortly behind him is uncle Steve, he’s a giant prick but he’s pretty cool to have around. Mama Rose walks in and straight away starts telling me how I should redecorate my apartment and invite Feng Shui into my life.
