The Hebrew Congregation of Somers Hold Bark Mitzvah to Bless the Companionship of Dogs
On Sunday, the Hebrew Congregation of Somers held its third annual Bark Mitzvah to bless and honor the animals its members hold so dear. Attended by about 30 pets and their owners, the serene setting next to Shenorock Lake mirrored the relaxed demeanor of the bipeds. But the dogs were another matter at the outset of this day. A lot of barking and sniping at each other, having a leg over Mother’s Day may have been a little unsettling. But a calm definitely emerged at a distinct moment of the proceedings.

To All My Doggie Friends, I Most Humbly Apologise
I’m sorry because I honestly just didn't get it, but I am now grown-up enough to admit that a dog really can change your life. My hubby and kids are furious, of course, because, if I said, "Look, we are not getting a dog and that's final," once, I said it a thousand times throughout their childhood, and I can appreciate their frustration, in that now they're all grown up and flying the nest and Roxy the dog moves in. Mum, who didn't like dogs, is now hopelessly smitten.

No One Prepares You!
For some reason you never hear about what it's like to experience the end of you and your companions story together. It starts with the first knock. It doesn't have to be anything big. The first knock hits them hard! It hits them hard but they are tough and they put on the brave face because they know you're scared and your company is all they want. For example my Dog, Jay-Jay, had a stroke while I was on holiday! It was a horrible feeling, when I finally got to him I knew that it affected him mentally and not just physically and the damage was done. He'd never be that same again. This didn't affect his personality but only his physical capabilities and his confidence in himself.

Puppy Possibilities
12 legs. 6 eyes. And three big hearts. About three and a half years ago, my partner and I moved in together following our first year anniversary. It was momentous for both of us because we both knew we found the person we would stay with until we're dead. She'd chuckle at that statement because we joke that we are dead inside already. #deadinsidememesFTW

Furry Friends
One Sunday morning, I was awoken by the buzzing of what seemed to be my phone. I answered, only to hear my sister excitedly beg me to wake up. She had asked I get ready and go with her to pick up a furry little gift whom she’d be surprising her husband and daughter with. Without hesitation, I agreed! Who wouldn't want to go see newborn pups?! Twenty minutes later she arrived at my house and I hopped in the car, and there we were driving thirty minutes out of the city to meet our newest family member. As we pulled into the lovely, quiet community her friend lived in, I kept reminding myself that I was here to help her bring ONE puppy home. Little did I know I was going to walk into a living room full of cute, furry little adventurers that were ready to steal my heart!

Discovering My Dog’s Personality
Growing up, I always thought that dogs acted all the same; dogs were categorized as playful, loyal, and loving. Most dogs are but I was unaware that some had attitude (asides from Chihuahuas) or will find a way to be heard. I grew up in a Mexican household where dogs were not allowed inside the house. The family dogs we had were kept outside and I was unable to get to know them. Keeping your dog outside prevents an owner to grow a deep connection with their dog. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the owner does not love their pet but it’s very hard to create a deep connection since you ’re unable to see their reaction to things, their way of communicating, or their thought process.

It’s a common scenario—you’re playing at the park with your dog and suddenly he's across the field, humping another male dog. While you try frantically to stop it, you're thinking "do I have a gay dog?" Homosexuality occurs naturally in humans, so do dogs have a sexual preference? The answer may be more complicated than you think. There are several examples of same-sex relationships throughout the animal kingdom (including some sex lives of animals that are surprisingly violent) that may be applicable to our canine companions. However, very little is understood about animal sexuality and what drives their sexual behavior. Here’s what we do know.
