A PROMISE
A Hypothetical Reflection - Edvin Sterling 2026 ©️

I once promised myself
to never make the same mistake everybody
else does…
I promised to not continue
the endless cycle of being played again,
played again…
And played again…
I promised that I would never,
under any circumstance,
fall for the first girl who makes me
feel special.
I'd never fall for the first girl who
is always happy to see me
and actually
sees me
as a human being,
not as a helper or a side person
in a multi-million movie.
Someone who talking to feels
actually nice and not forced.
The words just come out, one after another,
and we don't just sit there in silence.
Someone with whom I can share ideas,
not of the future, but of here,
of the present, and we can laugh
about the dumb things we've been through.
Someone who feels like a safe place
rather than a label, like
"Friendship Shouldn't Be."
Someone who can emotionally understand me and be in my life,
not in the past,
but hopefully together in the future.
Someone who makes me really feel happy to wake up.
And while I hate mornings, the thought of her
awakens my inner body, and I just can't contain my emotions.
Someone who, even in my darkest days,
can lighten up not just the room, but the whole world,
and cheers me on with every step I take,
and stays by me no matter
what I've done or did.
I once promised myself
to never make the same mistake everybody
else does…
But what can I say?
I can be somebody or
anybody,
and follow the rules and cycles.

SUPER
Love how honest and relatable your poem is!
Nice!
Finding someone you can be yourself with, where conversation flows, and your mood is always lifted, is the measure by which everyone should judge their relationships. Nice work.
Beautiful!!
Nicely wrought. The sweetness and vulnerability shines through. I also like the ending. It wasn't where I thought you'd end up and I'm always pleased when I'm surprised. Congratulations on Top Story.
