Belle of the Bayou
Bad move, cher. Not just the slip of her kitten heel on the rainy February cobblestones in the Fourth Ward. She got caught snooping. Detective Deleon clucked and strutted like a rooster in his rush to clear her from the scene, waving cigar smoke to and fro as he gesticulated amid the thick air of the speak easy. An experienced crime reporter, Marie knew better than to let the coppers catch her on the wrong side of the line, but curiosity had gotten the better of her.

The line about “licorice trust” really caught me off guard in the best way — it has that chewy, earned feeling, like trust isn’t just sweet, it’s something you keep working through even when it pulls back a little. I also loved how the candy imagery stays playful but still holds something real, especially when you shift into dancing in the dark and singing together like the world has gone quiet around you. It felt like a reminder that joy doesn’t have to be loud to be deep. Was this poem born more out of a specific person, or out of a feeling you wanted to protect for a moment?
