The Balcony
An Ekphrastic Sonnet

Here is no synonym of loneliness
Solitude suffonsifies and sustains
I feel evening’s mischievous caress
My modest light, a sparkling watch maintains

Your patronizing pity and concern
Fit me like pants would fit a struggling dog
Bridges produce fragrant smoke as they burn
Of sundered loves, I have a catalogue

The human heart lives by motion and change
From it, fools demand strict consistency
From my vertiginous perch, out of range
Your ugly swarm of betrayals, I see

The blue night’s beauty demands naught of me
It leaves me alone, calm and bright and free
About the Creator
D. J. Reddall
I write because my time is limited and my imagination is not.
