This is The Pen Story. It’s an Army story. It’s actually my Army story, the one I pull out when the occasion calls for an Army story from my five years as an Army officer. My career was memorable, but mostly only for me and I can’t say my telling of its memorable bits works for everyone, but this one I can get to work most of the time.

Life as an Army Girlfriend
If you’ve stumbled across this, it’s probably because you’re experiencing the same thing, or at least something similar, that I am. It’s been 3 days since my boyfriend left for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. We dropped him off Monday, July 12, 2021, and he hopped on a bus Tuesday, July 13, 2021, to his home for the next 6 months. Basic training is only 2 months, but he’s also doing his 4 month schooling there as well. I knew that this day was coming, yet my heart still aches for him to be home with me. I’ve been preparing myself for this day since we found out his ship out date, but nothing can prepare you for that final goodbye or that final I love you.

Military Mayhem
The Army is special. They have their own set of rules and regulations and time old traditions. In many ways these are great and help keep everyone safe and in order, but in some ways they are irritating and old fashioned. Joining the military family you have to learn a new language of acronyms and new way of behaving.

Teamwork, Mission Report, & One By One
We aren't alone in what we do. Every big job will take a crew. Our team does grow, kept in view. When together we get more done. Things which are hard do become fun! With teamwork we shine like the sun! Heavy duties do become light. With a great team we boss each fight! United as one, have great might. Together our foes we'll confound. Pure in purpose we'll be profound. We'll watch our team grow in renown. With strong teamwork all is possible! With each success we're credible. We will become unstoppable! Flowing together like great waves. We'll penetrate strongholds like haze. As pure souls we're a shifting maze. We're born to adapt. We'll change forms. Constant change will become our norm. With each new change we are reborn!
