australia
With its rainforests, ancient rock formations and pristine beaches, Australia is the traveller's mecca whether you're flying solo or with mates.
Saved for a rainy day.
Long streaks of rain trickled down Juni’s bedroom window. “Is it even coming?” She sighed to herself, her eyes fixed on the empty driveway. Weather for the optimist. Finally, a dim light flickered through the foggy strains of water. She peered, hoping with her heart, her soul, could it be? She could hear the squeal of motor belts as an old van bounced over the muddy potholes. A frumpy figure clambered out the rusty door. Water trickling down their yellow rain hat and their emerald green wellington boots squelched as they approached her home. Juni’s eyes widen, lips separate, feet are swiftly placed down on the ground and quickly shuffle towards the front door. Upon her welcome mat in brown paper, dotted in droplets of rain is her future, hopes and dreams. She pulls her glistening eyes away from her much-awaited delivery, only to see the van creeping backwards towards the road. “Thankyou!” she yells as the squeal of belts become fainter and the van slowly disappears into the downpour. Inside she goes clutching the package as if it were the answer to all her problems. She places the package on the kitchen bench, uncrosses the bow and rips off the wrapping. A little leather hand stitched black diary is uncovered. She looks at the rickety dining table covered in dusty diaries that have ruffled pages and loose stitching. Juni pushes them aside and plonks herself down onto a chair. She smooths her hand over the soft leather and unlatches the brass buckle. Imagining herself becoming a famous writer and travelling the world. A desperate whisper escapes her breath, “This will be the story that sets me free.”

The Legend of the Golden Dolphin
Now, before I get the chance to tell you about my secret world, I wanted to say that my methods are unconventional, in fact they've been called borderline crazy, absurd, and even insane from my colleagues in the scientific community, those afraid to imagine the endless possibilities of our ancient aquatic links, and especially the friends who know me. No wonder my husband got scared and left when I went babbling on well, maybe more like an obsession, about my parents’ notations and clues in their little black book… something that later revealed to me ”the legend of the golden dolphin.” If I had known then what I know now, would I have still made the same unpredictable choices? Possibly, except I would definitely NOT have married Steve. Yet if I didn’t marry Steven, then I wouldn’t have gone on my broken heart path, and you know. Sometimes in life, the stuff we think aren’t meant to happen, does and then eventually, treasures are thankfully revealed. All in all, this amazing adventure in the deep waters of Oceania I hold dear because of my parents’ little black book. That book that took me beneath the waves into uncovering a remarkable mystery. Yet, whoa… I’m getting way ahead of myself.

Ryder & Black Book the Cockatoo
somewhere remote in the top end of Australia lived a boy named Ryder his best mate, a black cockatoo named Black Book. Black Book was a black cockatoo with big white flight feathers who, when he stretched out his wings, looked like a big beautiful black book with white pages.

Stroke of Luck
Opening the front door to Stroke of Luck diner, the bell jingles as Lauren shuts it behind her as she steps outside. Multiple grease stains litter Lauren’s black shirt, some more noticeable in the moonlight, the streetlamp next to the diner still broken, giving only the moon as light to lock the front door. She yawns, covering her mouth as she locks the front door to the little diner, her shoulders tense and in pain from carrying plates of food all day. She stretches her neck side to side to relieve some of the tension, but it is only temporary.

Property of a Lady
Property of a Lady I grew up surrounded by bushland not far from the beach. The water was clear and cold for 9 months of the year, and cloudy and warm as the post christmas holidays winds and waves finally swept the cold currents away, replacing it with big surf, sand filled swirling sea and water at 21 degrees that you could stay in for hours and still feel your toes. My parents had changed our life from a city to a country one. All we understood was that we could surf more easily and wetsuits were a form of everyday clothing. For them, I realise in hindsight, it was a lifeline.
