How Building Relationships Almost Ended My Writing Career
As an aspiring author, I was told that building relationships was one of the most important things I could do to ensure my success. I was told to start making friends with authors and readers well before I was ready to release my book, so that’s what I did. I participated in follow circles, I did writer lifts, I even added famous authors hoping that they would take notice of me. Unfortunately, one of the famous authors I followed did take notice of me and it almost ended my writing career before it started.

Vocal Vs. Medium
If you’d asked me a few months ago, I would have said I preferred Vocal. I had been writing for Vocal longer, and I was having trouble picking up traction on Medium. To be honest, I didn’t know how to use Medium. I was confused about publications and unsure of if I should submit my articles to them. I was also annoyed at the thought of having to pay five dollars a month for a subscription. I didn’t see the benefits until I realized that there were so many stories I wanted to read and couldn’t.

Mo's Pizza Was The Ultimate '90s Experience
Saying I love the ’90s is an understatement because I love everything from the campy movies to the iconic music. One of my favorite things about the ’90s was that you could find arcade cabinets everywhere. There was a Pac-Man cabinet at the grocery store, Street Fighter at Pizza Hut, and most importantly a Mortal Kombat cabinet at Mo’s Pizza. In all honesty, Mo’s Pizza was everything I loved about my 90’s experience.

Recently I wrote an article about Street Fighter's Chun Li and how she gets criticized for being oversexualized. While I don't find Chun Li to be sexualized, there is another character in fighting games that has been sexualized for nearly her entire existence. Her sexualization has become part of her character.

Why I'm Going To Self-Publish
“Thank you for submitting this to us, Leah, but at the time we’re going to have to pass.” I stared at the words in disbelief for a moment, but not because they were a rejection. I had been getting rejections since I’d started sending out query letters, and they no longer bothered me. What bothered me was that they’d gotten my name wrong. My name was Jade, and my protagonist’s name was Leah. It was clear they’d only skimmed through my submission, which was fine, but it opened my eyes.

What I Didn't Get To Wear During The Pandemic
What to Wear to a Pandemic? I see the words of another author pop up on Vocal’s homepage and quickly click on the story. I think maybe it’s someone who I can relate to, someone who’s gone through the same thing as me. What I find isn’t what I expected. While the author briefly mentions that she’s been wearing the uniform of PJs (same), she goes on to write about clothes she’s seen in the movies she’s watched during the pandemic. It’s a good story, but it wasn’t what I expected or needed to find.

Leave Chun Li Alone
I remember the first time played Street Fighter II at the arcade. I briefly glanced over the pictures of fighters, excited to see that there was a woman available to select. I loved being able to fight as someone I could relate to, and I always picked her. Chun Li wasn’t weak; she was equal to the men she fought against. She had special moves designed for her, including her powerful kick. I felt that she could do anything the men in the game could do, and I was right. She’s gone on to be more iconic than any of the men in the game, with her being featured and referenced in other media.

If you read the title, you probably think it’s clickbait. Cigarettes are meant to shorten lives, not expand them, but this cigarette did save me. It wasn’t my cigarette. I’ve never smoked and never will, so how could a cigarette possibly save my life?

A few years ago, I remember having a conversation on Twitter with a girl who’d monetized her Snapchat. This was long before Onlyfans existed, and I honestly don’t think she was posted Onlyfans material. When I asked her about it, she told me that you can monetize anything. The only thing I had that was of value was my writing, but people always tell you to give that away for free.

Skinny To Fat
To say I have a complex relationship with my body is an understatement. To be one hundred percent honest, I'm still in denial about it. I was thin for most of my life. My weight would linger between 105 and 115. When I was in high school a teacher threatened to call my mom and tell her she thought that I was too thin. I wish I could say that her words had no impact on me, but they did. I had never thought of myself as too thin because I wasn't starving myself, and no one had ever commented on my weight before. I was eating three meals a day, but I was also exercising for at least an hour a day (including karate lessons). I felt hurt, ashamed, and suddenly aware of my body in a way that I hadn't been before. Why had my teacher approached me in that way?

What if Gossip Girl Was Real?
In its prime, Gossip Girl was a cultural phenomenon that’s impact is still felt today. It influenced fashion and entertainment, with multiple remakes set in different countries. Several current tv shows wouldn’t exist if Gossip Girl hadn’t paved the way for them. It should come as no surprise that a show with such a huge reach is getting the reboot treatment courtesy of HBO. While this reboot offers a more diverse cast and new scandals, I can’t help but think of the original Gossip Girl and wonder what it would be like if Gossip Girl were real.
