Today I Was Woken By An Air Raid Siren.
I live in South Korea, a highly developed, modern, peaceful, safe, democratic country. Unfortunately, our neighbour to the north is none of those things. Except in one way – they do have some very modern missiles. Technically, the Korean War never ended. The fighting stopped on 27th July 1953 when an armistice agreement was signed, but no peace treaty ever was. Therefore, 70 years later, the two countries remain at war. However, you’d never know this unless you, well, know it. North Korea is often in the news, but nobody in South Korea is actually worried about this frozen war. Until today.

Love Is Not Enough
Night was descending as the metro lurched to a halt. I gathered the last of my energy, grabbed my heavy bag, and stepped off the sweaty carriage, away from the hot and sticky breath of a hundred strangers and into the cool evening air. It washed over me like a gentle wave as I spotted my boyfriend heading towards me. I smiled, but he did not return it. He never smiled upon meeting. It was a curious habit that irked me on normal days, but irritated me immensely that day after the hellish journey I had just endured.

Reflections
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cosy A-frame cabin. Out the corner of my eye I saw him looking at me expectantly, waiting for a reaction I knew I couldn’t give him. I pretended not to notice, and continued staring out the passenger side of the windscreen, watching the snowflakes hurl themselves at the car.

Life Pro Tips. Runner-Up in Holiday Hijinks Challenge.
In a former lifetime, I worked for a very fancy company. It’s the kind of company that most people have never heard of, including myself before I worked there, because it caters only to the obscenely wealthy. I fell into it by accident, having been looking for jobs that required fluent French speakers. It was a small, close-knit operation, and I loved my co-workers. Every day felt like hanging out with a bunch of friends. But when the CEO came into town for the annual Christmas party, we were all on our best, most professional behaviour.
