I have a confession to make... I've been happily married for over 11 years. We met at an all day concert in St. Louis that neither of us had planned on attending. My mom surprised me with a ticket the day before so I could go with my friends; Scott's buddy called him an hour before the concert started and offered him an extra ticket. We were both kids, I was almost 17 and he was 19 years old. He noticed me checking him out and hollered at me to come talk to him. We ended watching the rest of the concert together, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Let's be honest. No one can really prepare you for heartbreak or the emotional roller coaster that comes with it, especially the ones that throw you for a loop in one day. Valentine's Day has always been a polarizing holiday for many. Either you're spending it with a loved one or loathing the love in the air because a) you're nursing a broken heart or b) because you've been single for a while and are starting to accept your life as a cat lady/man. The holiday is certainly cheesy but we end up getting caught up in it anyways. That's okay! We all handle it differently. Perhaps you're like me and just refuse to sit and wallow in self-pity. You want to feel good and focus on ANYTHING else, you deserve that much right?

So, I know that I can be a bit of a drag when it comes to Valentine's day, but maybe it's because... welp, I don't have a significant other, and I really just don't care for the Lover's Holiday. For me, it's my younger sister's Birthday, so that's what I celebrate. Growing up with this Holiday as her birthday at first was a little strange, but I then realize that maybe this isn't so bad. But then, when no one showed up at her Birthday party, that was where I started to hate the holiday. I know it's the "Day of Love", but no one had the time to at least stop by for her Birthday. And even when I moved away from my hometown, away from her to pursue my own dreams, I always felt like Valentine's Day was my sister's Birthday, and even now.

Screw Valentine's Day
Valentine’s Day. Or better yet, the day we all wish Hallmark would have just left alone. A day the card companies went ahead and trademarked and realized was one of the only ways to keep them from having to file for bankruptcy. How did such a holiday come to be? Let me tell you there are so many theories, but my favorite is this. Enter: the Roman empire. One of the empires, some guy that had his name end with an -us, and he was power-hungry and started the whole manifest destiny before it was cool. So anyway, he heard that single guys fought better than guys with wives and girlfriends so he goes “okay no more marriage and dating”! The young men obviously didn’t like this, or more rightly, the young women didn’t like this. Enter our hero, some guy named Valentinus, or something like that. He decided to marry lovers in secret, thus coming to have the idea of Valentines. Other theories start with people dying and the people wanting to sign letters with names. Whatever. I have little energy to decide what to believe except that it is a barely qualifying holiday that is best left alone, and not in the hands of Hallmark cards.
