The Hare and the Falcon
Once there was a Hare living in his form. He had been passing his days unhurriedly without fleeing from predators when one afternoon, he heard the news that a Falcon was going to settle nearby. Frightened by the thought that his life was soon about to end, the Hare stayed up all night working his way to build a rock wall enclosing his home. He arranged the stones in neat order, carefully ensuring that there were no holes too big that the Falcon would get through. He ventured out to search for blackberry bushes, in the hope that the prickles would scare the Falcon away, and slipped some of them through the rocks on his wall and used the remaining as the roof. He left an opening small enough for him to enter, and when he was done and had settled inside, he closed the gap with his last shrub of blackberry and went to sleep.

The Sparrow and Her Young Ones
Lying atop a tree was the nest of a Mother Sparrow. She had five eggs ready to hatch, nestled neatly inside the roost. Her mate was nowhere to be found, but she could think no more of that matter at the moment, for the eggs were shifting in place. Excitement fell over the Mother Sparrow, and, chirping hysterically, she hopped toward them, anticipating the beautiful moment.

Scavenging School
Right after the sun had set, there was movement on the fallen leaves sprinkled across the ground. Flashing through the grass was a young field mouse, about two weeks old, already past his childhood and into adolescence. His fur reflected a brunette shade, mingled with the golden light from the sun. Suddenly he stopped, sniffed around, and wandered off in confusion. Somewhere behind him sounded another of his kind.

Endless Memories
Based on the Endless Memories Server for Endless Online Chapter One – Tutorial Island In the beginning Merlina had been skeptical of playing a virtual reality version of her favorite mmorpg Endless Memories, but as she created her character she compared how the different hair styles actually felt. This simulation was made to be realistic. Players could feel, taste and smell their way through the whole game. She picked a long hair style and made her hair purple. The bedroom she spawned in when she signed in seemed comfortable. There was a chest she spotted as soon as she signed in. Opening the wooden container she found a dagger. She was completely naked except for underwear and a bra. There was no option to take the bra or underwear off. Of coarse. What kind of admin would want players streaking everywhere you might ask? Ahem. Well that was enough of that idea Merlina thought as she remembered something she'd perhaps not want to mention in this story. She passed by a bathroom and pondered on the fact that she wouldn't have to use it while playing this game since she they put all players in an underwater virtual reality chamber to make the game work properly. She wasn't sure how it all worked, because they put her to sleep to hook her body up properly to the artificial intelligence. Players had to make it to level thirty before they would be allowed to logout. They did explain that as she signed the agreement, but she thought nothing of it since she had made it to level thirty before. How hard could it be right?

The Sirens Didn’t Kill Them
People still tell it like it was simple. “They stopped their ears with wax,” the storytellers say, as if wax is a thing you find lying around on the shore like driftwood. As if it does not come from mouths and bodies and seasons. As if it does not have a smell that clings to your hands for days. As if it does not remember the warmth that made it soft.

Red Lights. Content Warning.
The winter storm came on fast and hard. Luckily it was almost closing time, and it was a slow enough day that I could get the end-of-day cleanup done before locking the gate and heading out. Within the hour, you could barely see across the parking lot of the mall to the road beyond.
