Prey For Me Pt. 5
The sun sliced into the night sky with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel. Slowly, the clouds turned from a bruised purple to warm orange, as blades of golden light cut across the sky. Skeagan had slept fitfully through the night, after Aaliyah took him home. He was up before dawn, ready to move forward in the search for his brother. He watched the sky changing from his perch on the branch of a pine tree. The thick, green branches hid him from the mortals below.

An Unwelcome Guest
I have changed names to protect this family's privacy as requested. We will call them The Millers. Anna grew up on the Sunshine Coast, on what is still called Reed road back then, it was still largely wild. On the left side there were rows of freshly built houses. Behind those houses stood untouched forest entwined in rows of tall intrusive power lines. The other side of the street was much the same.

The Shriek. Top Story - March 2018.
I was sound asleep when I heard it. Underneath my blanket, my ears heightened to a state to where I could hear the drop of a pin a mile away. I wanted to get up but my body wouldn't allow me. I was stiff with fear. What could make such a sound? I couldn't imagine it out of a human or any wildlife nearby. It occurred again, only closer. My body came out of its stiffness, allowing me to get out of the bed. I dashed to the window, opening it all the way. I poked my body out and looked up and down the dark mountain beyond the trees. I waited a minute to hear the shriek again to detect its direction. It didn't come. I closed the window. Even though I didn't know what is was, I changed into my hunting gear and equipped myself with my rifle and handgun.

Turned
The entirety of nature in the hands of a simple librarian, an average everyday fellow. He would wake up, shake himself to get the body stirring and brain juices flowing, grab his dream journal and write down the experiences of the night. This was his every morning—same wake-up time, same cup of coffee—the drive to work, recognizing the uniform drivers and traffic, thinking the same things he always did.

Fun Gone Awry
Dear Journal, As I write this, the walls in this cell feel like it's closing in on me. I am just not used to living in such tight quarters. A prisoner across from my jail cell is swaying side to side, saying things like she is going to rip my throat out with a spoon, then shit in its hole. Another one laughs. She is in the cell next to mine. I hear her whispering loud enough that only I can hear her. She says, "I will do much worse, you cunt. I will pull out each hair on your head so slowly, you will beg for death. Then I will turn you inside out from your pussy." I've had similar things said to me. My reputation has slowly grown over the last three months, each person only seeing what they want to see and not what I want them to hear. I know that I deserve to be here. I have thought about it since these doors shut the first day. It haunts my dreams each night and sets the mood for my days here. I see a counselor weekly to talk about the trauma. It's helping, but at the same time it's not. My counselor says that I should write it all down. She said that if I did that, I might be able to come to grips with it, maybe even forgive myself. So, here it goes...

Something Happened Out There...
They were circling the cabin again. Out here in the woods, isolated from the noise pollution and general electric hum emanating from every street lamp and central air system of modern life, every footstep sounds like the hoof of a bull tamping the dust. They weren't exactly trying to hide their presence; for almost a week They relentlessly pressured Jessica, escalating their sensory assaults sporadically. This late in the game she had abandoned her initial "heroic" attempt to ignore her emotions and her memories. Every night of this so far had started the same way, but the days were always different. It was always worst when the sun was up.

Brilliant
As I looked out the stuffy window of my bedroom, I saw the crystal clear icicles hanging down and the majestic sun setting above the dark, silhouetted trees. The dusty orange and soft blue gradient covered the evening sky as I saw a flickering light in the center of the endless painted scenery in front of me. My sister callowly assumed it was a star, but my father made it a point to honorably argue that it could've been a satellite or a planet.
